Trophy Day

Today was Invitation Trophy. We had invited sailors form the other two clubs in the Welsh Harp. The format was three races, all to count. 2 races back-to-back, break and then the third race. We were 10 Lasers. The wind was not that strong today.

On the first race my start was not good. I think that I always mess up the first start. I was not doing great, but it wasn’t bad either. It was only on lap so it was a short race. Finished 10th.

There was not enough wind when going downwind to the start line and I just managed to make it in time.

Second race, slightly late start because I was behind the committee boat when the gun went. I was trailing behind, but not too much. No problems there either. Short race, one lap. Finished 10th.

Break

Third race, quite good start, but after the second mark I was last the wind was still inconsistent with too many shifts. I capsized at some point but I was not the only one. So I don’t feel that stupid. Generally speaking I was doing well. Someone didn’t finish, so I finished 9th.

Officially out of three races I was 9th!

Just as I had finished my shower, and I was about to change, Steve came into the changing rooms to tell me that they were asking for me. I put on some clothes very quickly, I went to the bar and they were giving trophies. After they finished with all the trophies they said that usually they give a trophy for “Exceptional Achievement” but to someone who doesn’t come first. This time it came to me because I was the least experienced helm and managed to finish all three races.

I have to admit that I was surprised, I didn’t expect it at all and it somehow made me feel good. You see people can always tell you that you are doing well and you are getting better and better, but sometimes it crosses your mind that they might just be polite. When they publicly give you an award it is different. It counts! When I was given the award they mentioned this blog, so I was given a chance of a short plug. The award was a bottle of wine and a glass with the club’s emblem.

I wasn’t ready for it and I didn’t have the chance to thank everyone who has helped me from time to time with a bit of advice, feedback, tips, etc.

Thanks everyone!
